Fifa 12 - Euro 2012 | Expedition

EA have been taking the FIFA franchise in new directions lately. It may still be a football sim at its core, but the addition of online features and experience-points in recent years have given it almost MMORPG elements. Then you’ve got Ultimate Team, which turns FIFA 12 into a card-collection game, allowing you to relive the days of your childhood, opening packs and hoping above all else that Messi is tucked up inside that virtual foil.

Euro 2012 is already changing things up by coming into the world as a £15.99 DLC offering. As well as adding the official tournament and more in-depth international clubs, there’ll be expedition mode. At first, I figured this would just be a career mode catered towards international football – turns out, it’s actually FIFA meets Risk, except you’ll be kicking balls into enemy territory instead of firing cannons.

You’re given your own dream team to mould, starting off with one key player and a bunch of reserves. Working your way across the world map, you’ll be able to win new players by beating other countries, adding them to your squad, slowly building your team of superstars. It’s a new, fresh way of approaching the game, and I’m kind of hoping it fails – if EA Sports‘ crazy experiments keep working, we’ll soon be playing FIFA first-person or using Vidic and Terry as tower defence turrets.
